Very frustrating to interact with through the core movement and shooting, sure. And in the end the gameplay just can't be polished to the degree of games that prioritize it more, yet Rockstar games can still be very good on these terms, because what they set out to do - the immersion - holds up in the end. Not to make you a convenient superhero main character who can do all the things normal NPCs can't, but to put you in the shoes of someone who has to play by the rules the rest of the game is basically also doing. To play a game that truly simulates a grounded feeling of reality whether it's historic or modern-day. You sort of get an even mix in the end but arguably the world itself takes priority over gameplay or "fun". So in the end that leads to diminished priority for gameplay, graphics and the rest. I know this just sounds like "Game-development 101" but when you're accomodating for so many different focuses and trying to make it consistent, it has to mean that almost every facet is given equal weight. So you have at least 10 kinds of interfaces for gameplay to deal with, and those have to be tested and mesh with the graphics and the way the underlying engine systems work. For Red Dead and most Rockstar titles, while there are many missions, they have to make sure all of it functions within the same playable space, whether it's super cinematic, optional, exploration, or custom things like buying, selling equipping, checking out different vehicles, etc. If this was a Naughty Dog game the developers would be laser focused on crafting a level that works with the core mechanics to the most well-paced and convenient way while serving the story, and providing an opportunity for arcadey combat. That means they're not really prioritizing the gameplay only, there's a lot of things they have to get right and realistically you can't make a game this way and then have "the best gameplay ever" because for every opportunity you add, you have to account for it somehow. Realism is a huge focus for Rockstar and it shows.

It's true, the controls can feel unbearable at times, and it does make me not want to play it for very long, and I had the same issue with GTA 5, but mostly on PS4 because of input-delay.īut I see it this way: You're making a game that is PACKED with features, amazing graphics and one of the most well-realized, immersive game-worlds you can think of.

They could have figured out a better way to do this.To me I always think of net effect and tradeoff. And, when I do want to actually hit someone and aim properly, my horse stops. you obviously can't look straight so you end up getting far away from the person you're escorting/riding with/protecting. all while shooting at people behind you (by pressing down the right stick (R3)) or to the side of you. I mean, when you hold down L2 to aim why is it that you can't just stay on the trail/road that you're on going at the same speed? You have to hold down x to keep going, hold down L2 to aim, Left stick to steer the horse, Right stick to aim the gun. but the horse controls just ruin the whole experience when you're not just riding from place to place. So what did I do? I hopped onto the train engine and shot people while standing on top of there. are they fucking insane? I could have tried a million times and not been able to do that. I can remember having to escort a train for the Mexican Army and you're supposed to stay on your horse and fend off attackers from both sides of the train. Having to pan around 360 degrees so slowly to try and shoot the guy on a horse circling you is a extreme headache.

shooting people on horses is next to impossible without autoaim. it's all very GTA4-ish (I know it's the same game engine). In fact, it's the best western game i've ever played and I love the controls for shooting and running.
